This week we have our first poetry submission, which is a reflection from Claire Reed (@missreedireed) about the process of doing a part time postgraduate degree. Poetry can be very helpful when doing the PhD write up, even if your topic couldn’t be further from poems! For me, writing poetry has become an important part of the reflective process, and has helped me to work through issues in my work. Writing poetically can change your perspective and help you to get to the heart of the matter.
Moreover, writing poetry is excellent discipline for academic writing. You have to think carefully about your language, the implications of each word. It also encourages you to think of the impact of your writing on the reader. Sometimes in writing up the PhD, we can be so close to the topic that we lose sight of how it might seem to our examiners!
Finally, writing poetry can be an excellent way of working through the difficult emotions that often come with doing a PhD. I’ve written poems about writer’s block, imposter syndrome, feelings of isolation and many more difficult emotional aspects of doing the doctorate. Sometimes poetry can be very comforting to create.
So, without further ado, I present our first poetry submission.
